Thomas Eddolls: Fine English Craftsmanship and Design
The bespoke fine furniture created by Thomas Eddolls is more than just a set of drawers or a surface to put a mug on. That’s all very important (providing you have a coaster to hand), but it’s not the sole point. Eddolls’ pieces, very often, are about creating or reviving memories – homes, people, and special occasions.
Creating and recreating memories
Tom Eddolls, creator of Fine English Craftsmanship and Design, prefers the variety of commission work, rather than being stuck with one type of design. He bridges contemporary and classic by mixing materials, styles and methods. One recent project includes a pair of outwardly quite sensible, clean-cut, eucalyptus and maple side tables for a gallery, but he’s also been known to carve everything from traditional cabinets with gilded drawer handles, to curved, fluid console tables. Previous designs have been constructed from sycamore, cherry, and pear, featuring lock and key openings, with smooth lids, and natural grains running throughout the piece.
One of Eddolls’ current works in progress is a carved, upholstered stool requested by a customer – the original lived in his parents’ house. Carved and gilded, it’s quite grand for such a simple piece of furniture. The sketches show the geometrical layout drawn to find the flute points on from the turned mahogany legs, which according to Eddolls, carves well and “behaves itself”. His keepsake boxes are another popular choice – he’s currently working on a wooden chest commissioned for a wedding, designed to store the memories of the day.

Eddolls will be exhibiting his work at the largest exhibition of contemporary designer-maker furniture in the UK in Cheltenham in August this year – Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design. Established in 1994, 70 designer-makers will exhibit their work in 2018, including furniture makers, artists, glassware designers and jewellers. Tom is currently working on a speculative piece, which will be displayed at Cheltenham.
When creating pieces on commission, Eddolls works closely with his customers to choose the style, materials, textures, grains, and shapes. Offering high-end, bespoke commissions made from FSC Certified timber, he works with a variety of specifications and influences.
