To most, Paul Hollywood is the beloved bread connoisseur behind beloved smash hit BBC cooking series, The Great British Bake-Off. However, on May 29th, the Wallasey native has the opportunity to explore his other passion – cars.

Paul describes himself as a “full time baker and part time racing driver”, and his Big Continental Trip sees the beloved baker explore all the motoring adventures in store in Italy, Germany and France.

In a tantalising trip across Europe, Paul has the opportunity to indulge in the finest food, drink and fun Europe has to offer, accompanied by local and special guests at spots along the way.

Paul is a firm believer that you can learn everything you need to know about a place and the people who reside within by the cars they drive, and aspires to share this insight into Europe with viewers of Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip. With Brexit hot on everybody’s lips at the moment, there’s no better time to have a lighthearted lesson about our continental neighbours.

Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip sees Paul sit behind the wheel of some of Europe’s most exotic, delightful and often unique cars, some for better, some for worse, as he learns about their drivers and the history behind each model.

When in Rome, Paul learns to drive like an Italian in a borrowed Lamborghini, with Strictly Come Dancing’s Bruno Tonioli as a co-pilot. Here, he delivers dry cleaning in a three wheel Piaggio Ape and samples mass produced cars ranging from the Alfasud to the Fiat Panda 4x4, looking to the past to understand Italy’s sophisticated motoring heritage.

In Germany, Paul finds himself in the spotless hometown of the Volkswagen, Wolfsburg. In the words of Alan Partridge, “Britain has some of the safest roads in Europe. But this isn’t Britain – this is der Autobahn!” The Bake Off bread connoisseur discovers this for himself as he attempts to tackle the Autobahn, accompanied by racing driver Bernd Schneider in a Mercedes AMG GT. He visits a nudist camp in a Volkswagen Kombi van, and takes British comedian landlord character Al Murray for a cruise around the Nurburgring.

In France, Paul races a horse and cart across a field, meets legendary racing driver Henri Pescarolo at the iconic Le Mans circuit, where he learns about the 24 hour endurance race, and challenges one of Renault’s first turbo-era Formula One around the Magny Cours circuit behind the wheel of a modern hot hatchback.

Talking about Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip, Paul commented, “Cars have been a passion for me since I was a small boy and first saw the Aston Martin DB5 in a Bond film. I use them to de-stress and I believe they’re a means of expression, not just a means of transport. It’s a dream for me to be able to share my passion on television for the first time with this new series with BBC Two. While baking is my job and what I’m best known for, cars have always been my greatest love – I hope that comes across in the show and that viewers enjoy coming on these terrific journeys with me.”

. Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip premieres on BBC Two at 9pm on Sunday May 28th.

CEO of North One Television, Neil Duncanson, added, “We’re delighted to have been able to make this show with Paul, who I think had been dying to make a proper car show for some time! Big Continental Road Trip plays to all his strengths; capturing his great sense of humour, his easy but direct manner, his knowledge of culture and food and of course his great love of cars. That the BBC has chosen to air the show in the 9pm Sunday slot shows the faith they have in Paul and show appealing to a broad audience and I have no doubt it will be a big hit.”

Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip is a three-part series produced by North One Television, split into one-hour episodes, covering each country individually and shown weekly in the Sunday 9pm slot on BBC Two.
