Anna Wintour at the Met Gala
On the 5th May 2017, Anna Wintour, described by the BBC as being “one of fashion's most influential, and formidable, commentators” was made a Dame by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for her services to fashion and journalism.
67-year-old Anna has often been recognised for her signature ‘bob’ haircut and dark glasses. The fashion connoisseur was raised in London by her British father and American mother, and was well known as the editor of British Vogue before taking the helm at its American sister publication in 1988.

Nicknamed “Nuclear Wintour” for her no-nonsense way of micro-management, Anna has been widely credited with turning American Vogue into one of the leading fashion publications in the world.
In 2013, Anna was named artistic director of American mass media company, Conde Nast. Earlier in the week, she attended the Met Gala in New York, where actresses, singers and models alike all congregate to emerge sartorial superior, which Anna herself organises to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume institute. The Met Gala is often considered to be one of the biggest events in the fashion year. Over the years, she has raised approximately £116m for the costume institute, which, in 2014, was named in her honour. Last year, the gala raised approximately £104,179,50.00. Tickets for the 2017 Met Gala were believed to have been £23,000 each.

Anna is also believed to have been the inspiration for Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda, in 2006’s big screen adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ Lauren Weisberger formerly served as Anna’s personal assistant.

Anna was named at the New Year Honours list, and at the ceremony, she spoke briefly to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Talking to reporters congregated at the event, Anna fondly recalled how the Queen could not find where to attach the brooch on Anna’s Chanel outfit, with which she wore an accompanying pink belt. In light of yesterday’s announcement, when Prince Philip retired from his Royal engagements, Anna commented, “I congratulated her on Prince Philip's service because obviously that's so remarkable and such an inspiration to us all.”
