Between the 1st and 3rd September, the Concours of Elegance 2017 will commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s historic 1-2-3-4-6 victory at the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour Race.
The Concours of Elegance was established in 2012, held within the royal grounds of Windsor Castle in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Upon its launch, the Concours of Elegance raised the bar across the world for a collection of beloved classic cars, winning a vast array of some of the most prestigious prizes in its first year, something which was previously unheard of.
The winning trio of Jaguar D-types will drive in a convoy, showcased alongside two other Le Mans-raced D-types, into the picturesque grounds of Hampton Court Palace in Richmond-upon-Thames, London over the weekend of the Concours of Elegance.
Although Jaguar took the gold in both the 1955 and 1956 Le Mans 24 Hour race, it was the following year in which the Jaguar D-type cemented its legacy in the limelight. The first two pole positions were driven by Scotland’s Ecurie Ecosse team, with the bronze taken by Equipe Los Amigos and the Equipe National Belge just falling short of the winner’s podium in fourth. Fifth place was taken by a privateer Jaguar D-type, driven by the duo of Duncan Hamilton and Masten Gregory.
Six decades later, the winning trio will once again be centre of attention at Hampton Court Palace, accompanied by the D-type XKD 504, which visited Le Mans in both 1955 and 1958, and the XKD 605, which took sixth place at Le Mans in 1956.
In the days leading up to the Concours of Elegance 2017, the five D-types will cruise around the country on a tour of the United Kingdom, starting at Classic Works in Coventry, the new heart of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, before visiting Silverstone and the home of the Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E-Team, before finally arriving at their destination of Hampton Court Palace on the morning of Concours of Elegance.
The collection of D-types has been affectionately named ‘Jaguar’s Fifties heroes’ by the brand, and accompanying them at Concours of Elegance will be the Jaguar XJR-9, which seized the victory at the 1988 Le Mans race.
Over the weekend of Concours of Elegance, the D-type display and a number of other prestigious machines will once again rev into life as they drive to the new Concours of Elegance central stage. Celebrities and experts within the motoring industry will be on hand to provide commentary and share their expertise of Concours of Elegance’s world-class cars and features.
Adult tickets for Concours of Elegance 2017 start from £25, with concessions from £17.50. Children under five and carers are welcomed to the event for free. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend, a day which is often reserved for owners of the main showcase cars.
The full line up on display includes the Jaguar D-type XKD 606, the Jaguar D-type XKD 603, the Jaguar D-type XKD 513, the Jaguar D-type XKD 504 and the Jaguar D-type XKD 605.
