In 2016, there’s no denying that within the male grooming industry, one aspect has taken precedence as the ‘must have’ accessory of the 2010’s – the beard. The subject of various memes spread across every corner of the internet and a hashtag on Instagram that usually features approximately 18 million posts of beards both splendid and simple, each more style than the last, the beard is without a doubt the ‘must have’ grooming trend to dominate the current generation. Editorial Coordinator Daniel James Parry spoke to celebrity barber Joth Davis, owner of Savills Barbers in Sheffield, a man who encounters these characteristic chin dwellers on a daily basis, about his approach to barbering and how your beard can look its best.

THE FOXLEY DOCKET: How did your journey to where you are today begin? Who taught you to become the craftsman that you are today?

Joth Davis: When I was young I had a Saturday job in a local hairdressers and my passion grew from there. I left school, I went straight into hairdressing and for the first year, I was pretty much self-taught. When I received my very first wage my first wage I bought my own pair of scissors and a comb. I used the simple practice of stand, watch, repeat and started cutting all my mates’ hair.

Nowadays, it is important to keep up to date with trends. I’m constantly looking for new ways to improve what I do personally and what we do as a team. I am extremely fortunate that I get to travel the world with my job, so I get the opportunity to work with, and learn from, some amazing barbers and hairdressers. I am also constantly looking at new YouTube videos and tutorials to find new ways of improving my craft.

TFD: What do you think puts your shop on the map that draws customers from all over the world?

JD: I think that Savills Barbers is a unique destination and an above average traditional barbering and wet shave service – “A one stop man shop.” Something unique is that we have a ‘Barbers for Life’ brand of in-house designed barber apparel that includes aprons, clipper cases etc. I also think our training academy sets us apart. We attract barbers from international locations such as Australia and New Zealand to train within Savills. I think this has to do with social media, and how it can connect you and your company with people all over the world.

TFD: What drove you to open The Savills Academy? Upon first opening, how was the initial response?

JD: The reason I opened the Academy was due to the amount of requests I was getting on social media. I had ignored them for six months until I really realised what an amazing opportunity it would be. I love to teach those as passionate about barbering as myself. I’m continually finding new ways to teach and improve my own haircuts. I don’t believe you can ever stop learning and the academy is the perfect place for this. The initial response was mind blowing – we were booked up for months at a time and now we are continually booked up!

TFD: What do you personally take from your job?

JD: Being a barber is my passion, and I think now being able to teach others and watch people grow is really something that I find satisfying about my job.

TFD: As somebody well versed in the industry, are there any trends you’re noticing for men’s grooming these days?

JD: The beard is still a staple trend and becoming increasingly popular – the most popular style is a mid length beard (nicely trimmed and tapered), the shape hugs the face giving a clean line and then drops below the chin. It complements a short faded hair cut perfectly. The Great British Grooming Co. Beard Balm (£6.99 Superdrug Nationwide – Click to Buy) is perfect for creating this style as it’s great for stubborn beards that need more discipline than others.

TFD: Why do you think beards have become so fashionable in recent years? What is your personal opinion on them?

JD: The whole beard phenomenon followed the introduction of “Movember.” It has now been running for 11 years and as guys started growing their taches and beards to raise money for Men’s health during the month of November, when the month was up, they decided to keep it. The facial hair trend just kept growing and growing from there.

TFD: What are your tips on keeping a good beard?

JD: Beards don’t take care of themselves once fully grown. They need upkeep to maintain shape and prevent that caveman look. The trick is to ensure that it does not look unkempt.

Wash your beard every other day (washing too frequently can strip out natural oils). The Great British Grooming Co.™ Beard Wash (£4.99 Superdrug Nationwide  –  Click to Buy) has been designed to gently freshen, cleanse and untangle facial hair leaving it soft and itch free. To keep your beard hydrated and itch-free all day, a good beard oil is key. Just a few drops of The Great British Grooming Co.™ Beard Oil (£8.99 Superdrug Nationwide – Click to Buy) each day will soften your beard and eliminate any itch.
