“Still got a lot to go”

September 6th marked the day of Stage Three of Tour of Britain, and a breath-taking win by Ian Stannard. With hundreds of locals taking to the streets to cheer on them on, the cyclists made their way from Congleton to Tatton Park in Knutsford, where more people eagerly waited to see who would win the stage.

By holding a local contest, the trophy, winner’s jersey and flag was designed by school children who presented their creations on stage. The trophy was brought to life by the talented Deborah Moses, a glass artist from Knutsford, who also created the stunning orange bike displays positioned throughout the race track.

Cheshire East Council went all out with entertainment for the bustling crowds that gathered on the Tatton Park lawns. From food stalls to arts and crafts, and demonstrations, many visitors took to lounging on the grass to watch the live action shown on a giant TV towering above the track.

Truly embracing the spirit of things, many people decided to cycle to the event in their full get-up as a show of universal support, leaving their bikes either tied to the many racks available as they excitedly waited for race to pass.

The real excitement started when the cyclists came close to the parks finish line. With thousands of people packing against the railing, banging out the beat of the music blaring from speakers, the first few cyclists crossed the finish line, pushing with all the energy they had left.

A sense of patriotism delighted the crowd as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place went to three British participants. The winner, a local man from Manchester, Ian Stannard, proudly took to the podium to receive his trophy and modestly stated;

“I’ve been struggling a bit, especially after Rio, so it was nice to get a win under the belt.”

This is the first time Ian Stannard has won a stage in the Tour of Britain, and what an achievement it was, with him breaking from the pack early on in the race and securing a huge 7-minute lead.

There was truly a sense of community within this event, with businesses, volunteers and locals all giving up their time to support the determined athletes, and with that, support all the British athletes who have represented us in similar events and the recent Rio Olympics.
