“Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies”, croons Beatle and British pop icon John Lennon in 1967’s ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.’ It’s almost as though these lyrics have been encapsulated and produced in the form of a stunning grand sculpture, which can be found in the picturesque Tatton Park in the heart of Cheshire.

Designed by Cheshire based artist and leading figure in kiln formed glass, Deborah Moses of The Silver Zebra, the sculpture celebrates Stage 3 of the upcoming Tour of Britain, welcoming the tour to Cheshire in an undeniably impressive and intricate manner.

Embodying the spirit of Cheshire, Deborah uses glass to preserve images of Cheshire and its numerous towns, the Tour of Britain and a treasure hunt of Cheshire-related links for guests to discover as they visit Tatton Park and the Tour of Britain.

Seemingly defying gravity, the sculpture consists of over 25 bicycles and numerous parts, all painted bright Cheshire East orange, which appear to be suspended in mid air in Tatton Park, which plays host to the Tour of Britain, the nation’s premier road cycling event.

In addition to this display of glass grandeur, Deborah installed a quartet of the bicycle sculptures on the Middlewich roundabout near the recently opened Harvester Salt Cellar restaurant.

Deborah has been entrusted with the task of creating the Tour of Britain winners’ trophy, which was designed by a pupil from Astbury St Mary’s Church of England primary school, 10 year old Charlotte Ward, whose design was chosen from a school competition. Naturally, the school will also receive a copy of the trophy.

Deborah’s glass sculptures are exhibited and sold by Bang and Olufsen of Wilmslow, who have sponsored part of the sculpture, featuring their very own bicycle sculpture in the Bang and Olufsen showroom window. Providing the scaffolding tubes and fittings for the project was nearby building materials supplier, Manchester Actavo.

Speaking about the Tour of Britain project, which Deborah has widely broadcast on Twitter accompanied by the hashtag #TSZToB, she commented, “This has been a challenging commission to work on given the structure of the bicycles and the logistics but also a fun one as she was able to incorporate, what she thought are links back to the beautiful county of Cheshire for visitors to spot and is proud to see the tour come through.”

Stage Three of the Tour of Britain is due to take place on Tuesday 6th September, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for the 22nd September in front of Cheshire East and a number of exclusively invited guests.
